Santa Marina Mykonos, the rebirth of an iconic resort
Built more than two decades ago by visionary entrepreneur Elias Papageorgiou, who had a major contribution in establishing Mykonos as an upscale destination, the Santa Marina Resort by Luxury Collection has recently undergone an exceptional transformation, with complete renovations and redesign of its facilities.
Greek interior designer Silvina Krontira who was responsible for the transformation, has achieved contemporary, yet understated elegance, with a resort feel throughout the entire resort, while maintaining its Greek DNA. The resort’s newly designed rooms and suites feature natural materials such as teak wood, limestone and linen fabrics with a great emphasis on the quality of the materials and the finishes. Among the aesthetic highlights are the four-poster beds and the travel trunk shaped bedside tables. There is also a wide choice of accommodations, ranging from a generously sized deluxe room to suites and villas with their own pools.
Design elements have been carefully synchronized with XXI century amenities such as SmartTv’s, high-speed wi-fi internet throughout the entire resort, individually controlled air-conditioning, a large working desk in each room, sound-proofing and a sophisticated lighting system. All rooms feature the heavenly comfortable Luxury Collection Signature bed, with the finest silk cotton linens, not to mention the bespoke Luxury Collection bathrobes and towels.
The only luxury hotel resort in Mykonos with a private beach (protected by the island’s notorius winds), the Santa Marina Resort is uniquely situated on a secluded peninsula, actually a large private estate with a lush gardens and spectacular sea-views. With two restaurants, three swimming pools, a tennis court, a chapel, a children’s playground, a gym, a luxury Spa and a lavish private beach which extends 150m, the Santa Marina Resort is ideal choice for the most diverse Mykonos traveller profile, whether it is families with children, party-goers, those celebrating special occasions such as honeymoons but also those who seek utter relaxation and anonymity.
Like all the accommodations of the resort, my one bedroom suite had an outdoor space – a large terrace, ideal for sunbathing in the afternoons. The views of the sea at any time of the day are truly sublime! The limestone bathrooms feature a large glass enclosed rain shower. Wardrobe space is ideal, with plenty of storage space. There is also a beautiful sense of warmth instilled by the wooden floors and a beige colored wool carpets. Housekeeping service was flawless and I appreciated how they remembered by timing preferences for turndown and regular service.
The two restaurants of the hotel offer excellent food and a very warm service. Make sure you do not miss lunch or dinner at The Bayview, the signature restaurant of the hotel, where you can indulge yourself with freshly caught fish and a delicious sushi selection (unique on the island). The views from the Bayview Restaurant are breathtaking, overlooking the private beach and the endless sea. I loved how candidly staff would remember not only my name by also my preference at every occasion.
Run by Cristiana, the daughter of her late father, the team is young and extremely motivated. Although less than a week since re-opening during my stay, staff all shared a passion to serve and to provide the most personalized service. Being a member of Starwood‘s Luxury Collection must have also contributed to bringing up the resort to the highest luxury standards. Today, the Santa Marina Resort in Mykonos is rightfully associated with other iconic properties of the Luxury Collection such as Prince de Galle in Paris, Gritti Palace in Venice or The Chatwal in New York.
