Moynat, now owned by LVMH, opens flagship store near Hermes flagship in Paris

Legendary French trunk maker,Moynat opened silently this week, a new flagship store in Paris, on leading luxury high street Faubourg Saint Honore, right near the Hermes flagship store. There would be no buzz about this story, unless we mention that Moynat was acquired earlier this year by luxury giant LVMH, who has been a menace to Hermes, since it acquired a stake of 24  percent, creating all out war between the two companies.

The new Moynat flagship store covers 0ver 200 sqm and is flaked by another of its direct competitors, heritage leatherwear maker Goyard. The handbags are priced from 1,800 Euros to 24,000 euros for a ballerina bag in crocodile. The trunks are made to order from the company’s workshop in Burgundy. Moynard will soon launch a book which will trace the history of the house founded by Pauline Moynat in 1849 with the opening of the very first store on Avenue de l’Opera.

LVMH has pledged to re-launch the historical brand and to expand its product range, drawing on its immense heritage, thus taking on a huge challenge. Many associate the new opening of Moynat with the ”war” between LVMH and Hermes, especially because of the the choice of location – right near the Hermes flagship in probably the most expensive section of the most expensive luxury street retail in Paris.

Moynat may indeed share historical values and a dedication to French craftsmanship with Hermes, however, re-launching Moynat to become a true competitor for Hermes seems very unlikely.
