MANDARIN ORIENTAL cancel project in Marrakech
Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has cancelled the much delayed opening of its property in Marrakech over disagreements with the owners and developers of the property. Mention should be made that Mandarin Oriental had a management agreement to operate the property.
The luxurious resort which was the setting for the highly publicized Sex and The City Movie 2, was initially scheduled to open early 2010. Mandarin Oriental’s decision comes amid the unstable political and economical situation in Morocco, tourism being directly affected by the ongoing war in Lybia and turmoil in other countries. Marrakech luxury hospitality market is already overcrowded with more than 10 hotels and resorts, with operators such as Sofitel, Lucien Barriere, Four Seasons and independent hotels such as La Mamounia.
