Major luxury hotel chains eye expansion in Spain
InterContinental, Starwood and Spanish chain Melia currently dominate the five star hospitality market in Spain’s major cities. W HOTELS opened in early 2010 its flagship property in Barcelona, on the famous beach front of the city. Marriott International has been making major advances thanks to its alliance with AC Hotels, planning to open an AUTOGRAPH Hotel by 2012 in Madrid. InterContinental is scheduled to open its first INDIGO Hotel in Madrid by 2012, while Hilton chain has signed a management agreement for a Waldorf Astoria branded property in the heart of the city of Sevilla.
International luxury chains have been slowly breaking the ”monopoly” of Spanish chain MELIA, which has been dominating most major hotels. MELIA has been operating since 2006 its ME BY MELIA five star designer hotels, with two major locations in Barcelona and Madrid. Mandarin Oriental is currently managing a deluxe property downtown Barcelona, while Four Seasons, Park Hyatt and Taj are reported to review severala projects, scheduled to open within the next 5 years.
