French luxury department store company Galeries Lafayette inaugurated last week week its new department store in Jakarta, Indonesia. The new Galeries Lafayette in Jakarta which is situated within the Pacific Place Mall and covers 129,000-sqf (approx 12,000 sqm) on 3 floors is the only international store which is not operated in franchise but under a 50/50 joint venture between Groupe Galeries Lafayette and Hong Kong based retailer I.T.
The opening in Jakarta will be followed by the opening of the first Galeries Lafayette in China this September, in Beijing with I.T. Group too. The Galeries Lafayette in Beijing will cover 25.000 sqm and it will be the second largest in the world after the Paris flagship.
Besides an international mix of luxury and premium fashion, accessories and beauty brands, Galeries Lafayette Jakarta features a space dedicated to evening wear from the most talented Indonesian designers. Ready to wear under the brand of the department store are also featured in the selection.
Galeries Lafayette had a failed entry into Indonesia in the early 90’s and British department store Harvey Nichols in Jakarta closed 3 years ago after less than 2 years in operation.
Outside France, Galeries Lafayette is present in Berlin (since 1996), Dubai (since 2009) and Casablanca (since 2011). Future openings are planned for Turkey (2014) and Qatar (2015)
