FOUR SEASONS Mumbai, setting the standards for India – one of the best Four Seasons worldwide

Staying at the Four Seasons Mumbai, has not only enhanced my experience of Mumbai, the largest and one of the most vibrant cities in the world, but has also reminded me of Four Seasons’s unique DNA – understated luxury, impeccable facilities and the most warm, genuine and caring service. As a metropolis of great contrasts and most diverse vibes, Mumbai can be overwhelming, its climate only adding to that. I was really touched by a small note houseeking left on my shoes (without having asked for a shoe sine) ” Our city can be tough on your shoes and we have given them a good shine”.

I arrived at the Four Seasons Mumbai on the second day of the start of the monsoon season and indeed, I have experienced the heaviest rains in my entire life, with the skies remaining dark and cloudy throughout my entire stay. I did book a hotel transfer and unlike on many other previous stays at other luxury hotels, the hotel representative recognized me first and approached me. I was such a nice welcome, especially considering I had never been to Mumbai before – they must have had a photo of me…

Having stayed at many international Four Seasons properties, the one in Mumbai is impressive, a construction of the highest standards, with huge attention to details: the Italian light rosewood furniture in the rooms, including doors and other decorations, the yellow and white onix marble in the lobby and elevators, beautiful and very fresh smelling silk curtains, thick wool carpets in sand colour with touches of white and blue. Indian motives are reflected in the huge oil on canvas paintings in the lobby, using the most bright orange and red colours, the very bright orange or purple pillows in rooms and other public spaces as well as the pottery in the rooms, all locally hand made.

The quality of the construction, better than at most other new Four Seasons hotels, was reflected in all the finishes, including the wooden floors and the sound proof windows, which unlike at other luxury hotels in India, do not let though any of the dust from outside.

There are several details which pleased me so much and which I have not encountered at other Four Seasons hotels such as the freshly cut flower arrangements in the room, which are changed every day. With the weather being so dark, it felt like a blessing to be welcomed by such beautiful flowers every time I returned to my room. On one instance, the bouquet was so fresh, I could see the small water drops sprayed. And they were all beautifully smelling flowers such as tuberoses, lillies, lilac and hortensia.

Having visited other hotels such as the Taj Mahal Mumbai and the Oberoi, I can definitely say the Four Seasons has the largest rooms and the largest bathrooms. The quality of the Four Seasons bed is unmatched and so is the level of personalized service. The quality of the air-conditioning and soundproofing of the rooms places the Four Seasons on top of the luxury hotels in Mumbai.

Four Seasons also has the best luxury hotel SPA in Mumbai, with state of the art facilities and the best trained therapists for body treatments, yoga etc. The Rossano Ferretti hair salon at the Four Seasons Mumbai is regarded by locals as being the number one hair salon in the city. I would highly reccommmend the Apoha Mizra 90 minute treatment, a blend of Ayurvedic healing traditions and Western massage techniques, using pure essential oils and bundles of warm medicinal herbs. The vitality pool, experience showers and the crystal steam are heavenly especially after a busy day out in the city. No wonder, Asia SPA Magazine recently voted the SPA at the Four Seasons Mumbai as the best luxury city hotel SPA in Asia.

The hotel is within half an hour from the international airport and within less than 30 minutes from the major tourist attractions. The business district is also close and the hotel is actually strategically situated in the centre of Mumbai, between south and north. Despite traffic jams and irrespective of the time of the day, I always had a smooth ride back to the hotel.

Housekeeping service could rival any top luxury hotel in other major capital city internationally. After every turndown service, my clothing would be so nicely arranged and taken care of, not to mention, the fact that my room could not be any more clean, crisp and fresh throughout the day.

Front Office, Guest Relations and Concierge have an exceptional chemistry and blend in so well, providing the most consistent and coherent service. They do remember all the details and make sure the information is passed on so that there are no interruptions. Arranging a hotel car for meetings in the city or simply just a tour is done in minutes.

Probably the most fulfilling sentiment which I have felt at the Four Seasons was that of truly being a home away from home. Every time I was out from the hotel, I could not wait to come back to the hotel and even if I was on my own during the trip, I have never felt lonely, but pampered and taken care of. I have realized I developed my own little rituals and the room felt cosy and warm, despite the weather outside. There was also a sense of immense and genuine respect that staff extend to the guests, which I have found unique !
