British born designer Kim Jones, who grew up in Africa took over as Men's Style Director at LOUIS VUITTON with the mission to embrace the crafts and culture of Africa. With travel lifestyle as part of Vuitton's DNA, Jones brings to Vuitton his unique insights of Africa, especially its vast natural heritage. In an interview to IHT he speaks about his love for the wildlife and how he loves to escape from larges cities. Educated at legendary fashion design school Central St Martin in London, Jones used to work for Italian sportswear brand Umbro, German fashion house Hugo Boss and recently at Alfred Dunhill. Kim has contributed both as Stylist and Art Director for magazines including Dazed and Confused, Arena Homme +, the New York Times T Style magazine, 10 Men, i-D magazine, Numero Homme and Fantastic Man. He has also contributed womenswear styling for V and POP magazines. The Face magazine had him as one of the top 100 influential people in fashion, at number 20. in 2009, he was named Menswear Designer Of The Year by the British Fashion Council. Speaking to DrapersOnline in 2007 just after landing the designer position at Alfred Dunhill, he said about position titles.  “Post-Tom Ford at Gucci, I think the concept of the creative director is past its time. It is more important for the brand to have people steeped in its history, otherwise it can feel like someone’s hijacking the brand,” he explained. Jones is similarly vocal on the subject of transforming fashion houses. “Look at Lanvin and the way it was three years ago. It was a perfume brand that was mainly important at duty-free. Now it’s one of the most sought-after menswear collections. If you look at Dior and at YSL, they were complete duty free. Then they got someone on board to completely revamp their offer.”

While Marc Jacobs remains in charge of the entire creative direction at Louis Vuitton Vuitton, Jones is expected to complement and support his work. For 2012 he created a water resistant silk jacket, ideal to wear in a climate such as the Amazon rain forest, as well as wood work and carpentry, essential for the manufacturing of the Louis Vuitton trunks.
Speaking about Vuitton, Jones sais he has landed his dream job, appreciating how fast things can get implemented especially in large group such as LVMH, owner of Louis Vuitton.
