Chanel sponsors Palais Galliera in Paris to become first permanent fashion museum in France
Paris’s Palais Galliera has been the site of many fashion exhibitions curated by master historian Olivier Saillard over the past several years, from its recent “Anatomy of a Collection” show to his exhibition in 2013 about the work of Azzedine Alaïa.
This week, it has been announced that the museum will create permanent galleries dedicated to fashion, made possible by a donation of approximately 5.7 million euros by Chanel. “The house of Chanel is delighted to promote Paris, the international fashion capital, and in particular to support the Palais Galliera by making its exceptional collections accessible to all in new, permanent spaces that will bear the name of the house’s founder, Gabrielle Chanel,” said Chanel’s president of fashion Bruno Pavlovsky. “Supporting an institution like the Palais Galliera is part of our mission to bring fashion history to life.”
The Gabrielle Chanel Rooms will be located in the museum’s basement, a 7,211-square-foot area that will be open year-round, filled with fashions from the 18th century to today. “Thanks to the valuable support of the house of Chanel, the history of fashion, the excellency of French haute couture, the savoir faire and creativity will now have a prestigious place in these new rooms that Palais Galliera will proudly inaugurate in 2019,” said Saillard.
Until 2019, fashion fans can get a fix thanks at Saillard’s upcoming exhibit, “Balenciaga, l’Oeuvre au Noir,” which explores Cristóbal Balenciaga’s career-spanning love of the color black, opening next week.
