In 1863, a French wine merchant named Nicholas Thévenon and his wife, Célestine, arrived in Britain after fleeing financial turmoil in their native France. With only £5 to call their own, they battled against the odds and, within two years, had established the foundation for what later flourished into the world famous Café Royal, which today is owned and managed by The Set Hotels (Conservatorium Hotel, Amsterdam; Lutetia Hotel, Paris).
