Behind the brand: Maison Martin Margiela

L’Officiel Singapore has interviwed exclusively the team behind the highly secretive Maison Martin Margiela, owned by Renzo Rosso’s Only The Brave Group. The team shared several insights about the brand which showed its first haute couture collection in Paris, earlier this year:

1. “The Maison has had the same elusive philosophy since its very beginning. This was created as part of our DNA and remains as strong today as it was then.”

2. “Avant-garde is a way of being and thinking that can be illustrated in many ways. However, we do not describe ourselves in that manner, maybe more so conceptual, though we do like to keep a very open mind when creating.”

3. “Artisanal pieces have held a place within our collections since the start. In Spring- Summer ’06, we gave our artisanal pieces its own space by presenting it on its own. All pieces shown during our couture shows are handmade in our Parisian atelier.”

4. “We never think of a specific person or have a particular woman in mind when designing. Anyone can be the Margiela woman.”

5. “We don’t destroy. We reinvent pieces and reinterpret otherwise everyday materials and objects, giving them a new breath of life and an entirely new way of being. We continue to create in this way today.”

6. “Every piece created by the Maison bears the brand’s iconic logo. The four pick stitches holding up the tag are loosely sewn and can be cut off.”

7. “Asia is one of our prioritised markets. We have many stores opening in the foreseeable future and have always been very influenced by its culture.”

8. “Everyone wears white coats in the atelier.”
